Earlier this week VRFocus reported on the news that Roto VR, a mechanised solution for turning in seated virtual reality (VR) experiences, would soon be announcing the price and date of its final kit. At the same time, the company also launched sign-ups for interest in pre-ordering the device. Today, Roto VR is at the VRUK festival in London, UK. Founder Elliot Myers is talking ‘The Challenges of Seated VR’, and VRFocus is liveblogging the talk below.
An official description reads: “Most virtual reality experiences are designed to be experienced sat down, but what issues can this cause? Elliot Myers explores these challenges.”

Myers concludes his talk by stating that an API for Roto is in the works and will support all major HMD platforms.

The first audience question asks about additional immersion in comparison to, for example, a three-screen montior set-up. Myers suggests that Roto will benefit both developers and gamers as the HMDs don't care how the input is received, just that input is present.

Myers states that Roto is about solving the fundamental problems of VR, whereas others may add the 'luxury' items for further haptic feedback.

Myers is wrapping his session up, discussing the fact that developers of both videogames and other VR media are keen to support the device.

In addition, Myers mentions the Roto's table mount, that will offer additional accessories (such as a steering wheel or flight stick) to offer haptic feedback.

"We wanted to solve all of these challenges that come with seated VR," states Myers.

Myers suggest that tracking 'body yaw' is essentual to overcoming these issues, allowing for decoupled head/body traversal and more.

Bringing an audience member on to the stage, Myers offers an example of what he refers to as 'yaw body control', in which the avatar is limited by head-tracking opposed to having full body tracking.

Myers is suggesting that developers utilise techniques such as 'cockpit mode' or 'turret mode' in order to draw the user's eyeline forward, avoiding the issues that can arise from fast-paced traversal.

Moving on, Myers beguns talking about simulator sickness. "This is an issue that needs to be addressed."

Myers argues that mobile devices, during demonstrations or long play sessions, will need to be charged. This requires tethering in a similar fashion to desktop based HMDs.

Myers suggests that 95% of VR experience will be seated, according to his own personal analysis.
